Virus Protection

Many computers are sold with a pre-installed anti-virus program, but if you do not use it or update it for six months, it becomes obsolete and you may need to start from scratch. This is especially true for Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell computers.

You absolutely do not want to install a second anti-virus program over one that already exists. This can cause innumererable problems to your machine because the two anti-virus programs will fight each other and can lock up your machine pretty easily. You need to first un-install your obsolete anti-virus program before you install a fresh one.

If you have zero anti-virus programs on your machine, we recommend putting one as soon as possible. Our current anti-virus program of choice is AVG, made by Grisoft which makes a Free Edition that you can download off the Internet at www.grisoft.com.

With any anti-virus program you must 1) keep it current with regular downloads from the Internet (there are usually 1-3 per week) and 2) scan your computer after you've done the anti-virus updates. One without the other is not sufficient.

We can install an anti-virus program, configure it, and instruct you in virus protection for $40 at your home or office if you don't want to fuss with it yourself. Please don't go unprotected. The Internet can be an ugly place.

There are many anti-virus programs available. Search on www.google.com if you want other options.

After you've installed an anti-virus program, updated it, and scanned your machine for viruses, please remember to do that at least every 3 days so you stay virus-free. Having an anti-virus program isn't enough. You must maintain it and keep it updated.

There are two phases of virus protection: 1) Downloading the latest anti-virus updates from the Internet and 2) Scanning your machine. They are different. Doing one without the other is not reall protection.

If your computer is already infected, it will be difficult to install and update an anti-virus program. It's like getting a flu shot after you get the flu.

Kestrel Technologies, Inc. which owns and operates Monticello Pro Net can do a Virus Purge for as little as $40, depending on your machine's condition. We install an anti-virus program on your computer, purge your machine of virus-infected files, download the latest virus definitions so you're as up-to-date as possible, and give you hands-on and written instructions on how to keep your machine virus-free.
